The Best 4-Cup Coffee Maker on the Market 2020
1. Mr. Coffee Simple Brew 4-Cup Coffee Maker
The Simple Brew from Mr. Coffee is one of the least expensive machines on our list. As its name suggests, everything here is simple and efficient.
It measures 6 inches wide, 8 inches deep and 9.5 inches high, so you won’t need loads of countertop space. Bear in mind that you’ll need an extra inch of width for the handle when the carafe is in place. And you’ll need a total of 16 inches height to give you the clearance to open the lid.
It comes with a 4-cup carafe. Each cup – which here equals 5 ounces – is marked on the side. You don’t have to wait for the carafe to fill before you can have your coffee. A brew-pause function allows you to remove the jug, pour yourself a cup, then replace it and continue brewing.
The water window is cleverly designed so that it can be viewed from either side of the machine. No matter what kitchen layout you have, you’ll be able to see easily when it needs to be refilled. You’ll also be able to read it as you’re refilling, so you won’t have to worry about the reservoir overflowing.
The filter basket is removable, so it’s simple to fill and to clean afterwards. The wire mesh is fine enough that you won’t need to add a paper filter.
The power button has a light, so you can tell at a glance whether your machine is on or off. There isn’t an automatic shut-off with this one, though.
There’s no timer or clock here, and no other bells and whistles. But if you want a simple, reliable machine that’s easy on your pocket, this is a great buy.
- Brew-pause function allows you to get your coffee in a hurry
- Removable filter basket for easier filling and cleaning
- Dual aspect water window makes it easy to refill the reservoir
- No clock or timer
- No automatic shut-off.
2. Cuisinart DCC-450BK 4-Cup Coffee Maker with Stainless-Steel Carafe (Our Top Pick)
Cuisinart’s DCC-450 is another machine that will make four 5-ounce cups of coffee. It’s significantly more expensive than the Mr. Coffee Simple Brew, though. So what’s the difference?
Well, the most obvious one is that with this one you get a stainless steel carafe. That means it won’t shatter and it will help keep your coffee warm for longer. But you won’t be able to see how much is inside without removing the lid.
The compact design is great for kitchens where counter space is at a premium. It measures just 5.25 inches wide, 8 inches deep and 10 inches high.
The carafe has a knuckle guard to protect your hands and a spout that won’t drip. And a brew pause feature allows you to interrupt brewing at any time to pour a cup of coffee.
This also has an automatic shut-off. It will cut the power 30 minutes after brewing has finished. You’ll never need to worry about rushing off without remembering to switch off your coffee machine!
If you have coffee remaining after half an hour, though, you’ll be relying on the carafe to keep it warm. That’s not as long as you’ll get with some machines – but it does have advantages. Coffee left for much longer than that will go stale. Drink it within half an hour, and you’ll get a much better flavor.
One thing to note with this one is that there’s no way to tell when brewing is complete. There’s no alarm and you can’t see into the carafe. The best option is to listen to the machine: there’s a final burble when brewing is coming to an end.
One other thing to note concerns the design of the carafe. A rubber ring inside provides a tight seal, but means cleaning requires a little more effort.
- Brew pause function
- Stainless steel carafe won’t break and keeps coffee warmer for longer
- Automatic shut-off after 30 minutes
- The only way to tell when brewing is finished is to listen to the burbling of the coffee
- The rubber ring inside the carafe means cleaning takes a little more effort.
3. Gevi 4-Cup Coffee Maker with Auto-Shut Off
Gevi’s coffee maker has a glass carafe that will hold 20 ounces, enough for four 5-ounce cups of coffee.
It’s another compact machine, measuring 5.6 inches wide, 8.7 inches deep and 10.4 inches tall. And here, the brew basket is accessed from the front of the machine, via a swing-out panel. If you’ve got limited clearance beneath wall cupboards, this will be very handy.
The filter basket and cone filter are removable and are dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. If you prefer to wash by hand, the simple design makes that a quick job. And the filter is fine enough that you won’t need to buy paper filters to fit inside.
The carafe, however, isn’t quite as easy to clean. That’s because the opening at the top is small. Unless you have very delicate hands you may struggle to get a cloth inside.
There’s a brew pause function that will interrupt brewing for 30 seconds, giving you time to pour a cup. And the machine will keep your coffee warm for an hour after brewing has finished, before switching itself off automatically.
Another clever feature is boil-dry protection. The machine will register when there’s no water in the tank and when the temperature exceeds a set level. Brewing will then stop automatically, preventing any components from being damaged.
One thing to note for left-handers is that the water gauge is visible only on the left-hand side. That means that your hand will get in the way while pouring, making it rather tricky to read.
- Dishwasher safe cone filter and filter basket
- Automatic shut-off after 1 hour
- Front-loading brew basket is great for worktops with limited space beneath wall cupboards
- The carafe is a bit fiddly to clean
- The position of the water gauge makes it awkward for left-handers to read while filling the tank.
4. Aigostar Buck 4 Cup Coffee Maker
Aigostar’s Buck coffee machine has a smart black and stainless steel design that would look good in any kitchen. And it’s one of the least expensive machines on our list.
The carafe here is made of glass. It has useful gauge from 2 to 4 cups on the front. That allows you to see at a glance how much is left. Note that the cup size used here is 5 ounces.
You can interrupt brewing for 30 seconds at any time at the push of a button. That’s a handy option for when you’re desperate for caffeine! The nozzle won’t drip when you remove the carafe.
After brewing, the hot plate will keep the coffee warm until you switch it off. There’s no automatic shut-off, though, so make sure you don’t forget about it! The power button lights up when the machine is on.
The cone filter and brew basket are both removable, making it easy to clean and refill them. And both they and the glass carafe can be put into the dishwasher, making clean-up a breeze.
This measures 10.3 inches tall, 6.1 inches wide and 7.6 inches deep. You’ll need a few inches extra space above it to open and close the lid.
It’s lightweight, so easy to move if you need to. You may want to invest in non-slip pads to stop it sliding across your worktop when you remove the carafe.
- Handy measuring gauge on the glass carafe
- 30-second brew pause function
- The filter, brew basket and carafe are all dishwasher safe
- No automatic shut-off
- The lightweight construction means it will slide over your counter unless you add non-stick pads.
5. Brentwood TS-213BL 4 Cup Coffee Maker
Brentwood’s TS-213BL coffee maker is a striking shade of baby blue. If you love a pop of color in your kitchen, it will be hard to resist.
It’s another compact machine, measuring 6.25 inches wide, 8.5 inches deep and 10.5 inches high. The filter is inserted and removed from above, so wherever it’s positioned, you’ll need room to do that.
The tempered glass carafe has a plastic lid and handle in the same baby blue as the rest of the machine. There’s no measuring gauge on this one, though.
A light comes on when the machine is switched on, and it stays on until turned off manually. There’s no automatic shut-off here, so if you’re absent minded it might not be the best option.
There’s an easy-to-read gauge on the water reservoir. The filter and basket are removable, reusable and very easy to clean. And it even comes with its own coffee scoop.
One thing to note is that the coffee doesn’t get quite as hot as it does with some other machines. If you’ve fallen in love with the design, you can give it a helping hand by warming your cup first.
- Cute baby blue color and retro design
- Removable and reusable filter and brew basket
- Easy-to-read water gauge on the reservoir
- No automatic shut-off
- The coffee doesn’t get quite as hot as with some other machines.
6. Mr. Coffee 4-Cup Switch Coffee Maker
The TF4-RB is the second machine from Mr. Coffee to make our list. It’s slightly more expensive than the Simple Brew, but is an even more compact model.
This one is 7.25 inches wide, 9 inches deep and 10.9 inches tall. And it’s just over half a pound lighter than the Simple Brew, weighing just 2.2 pounds.
The basket filter is reusable and removable for easy cleaning. It’s loaded and unloaded through the top of the machine. Make sure you account for that extra height requirement when planning where the machine will go.
There’s a brew-pause function, so you can pause brewing to pour a coffee. The measuring gauge on the glass carafe allows you to see the moment there’s enough coffee to fill your cup. Note that the cup sizes here are 5 ounces.
The carafe doesn’t have a particularly wide opening, though, which makes cleaning it fiddlier than it would otherwise be.
The reservoir has a viewing window on either side. Whether you’re left or right-handed, you’ll be able to see the water level as you’re filling it up. Note, however, that the gauge showing how many cups of water inside appear only on the right.
A light comes on when you switch on the power. This is particularly useful as there’s no automatic shut-off with this one.
- Glass carafe with measuring gauge, so you can see exactly how much coffee is left
- The reservoir has viewing window on either side
- Removable and reusable basket filter
- No automatic shut-off
- The small opening in the carafe makes it a bit fiddly to clean.
7. KRUPS Personal 4 Cups Grind Drip Maker Coffee (Upgrade Pick)
At three times the price of many other coffee makers on our list, the KRUPS KM550D50 is an expensive option. But if you want the superior flavor of freshly ground coffee beans, it’s well worth the investment.
The stainless steel flat burr grinder has two settings for your preferred roast. And it will cope even with oily beans without getting clogged.
If you’ve run out of beans, you can also use the machine with pre-ground coffee. And whether you’re using beans or pre-ground, you can select a “bold” option for more intense flavor.
Included in the package are a permanent stainless steel brewing basket and coffee scoops.
There’s no brew-pause function here, but it doesn’t take long to get a full carafe. After brewing, the coffee will be kept warm for 30 minutes before the machine switches off automatically.
The smart glass carafe has a measuring gauge on the side and a stainless steel accent on the handle. And like all parts of this machine that come in contact with coffee, it can be cleaned in a dishwasher.
Note, though, that you’ll need to clean the chute between the grinder and the brew basket after every use. If you don’t, you’ll find it clogs very easily. Fortunately, it’s the work of seconds to simply rinse it off.
- Can be used with either coffee beans or pre-ground coffee
- All parts that come into contact with the coffee are removable and dishwasher safe
- Keeps coffee warm for 30 minutes after brewing is complete
- Needs cleaning after every brew
- No brew-pause function.
