The infrared emitter uses a patented design. It sits above the gas burner and radiates the heat so there are no hot or cool spots. The intense heat produced also means that any juices from the food are instantly vaporized, helping prevent flare-ups.
The cooking surface is made of porcelain, so it’s both durable and easy to clean. It’s generous too, offering 450 square inches of cooking space.
The ignition is electric, so getting your grill going is a piece of cake. Just push the button to light the flame.
There’s plenty of heat here. Three main burners offer 24,000 BTU, while a side burner provides an additional 10,000 BTU. Sear your steaks and burgers in the main cooking area and heat up sauces on the side.
And if you don’t need the side burner, cover it up with the lid and you’ll get extra preparation space.
A cleverly designed warming rack swings into the lid, conserving space. There’s also a temperature gauge in the lid to help you get perfect results as you grill. And there are wheels on the bottom of the cabinet so you can move it easily into position.

It’s a good option if you don’t have a lot of space. The round design has a small footprint but provides a reasonable 320 square inches of cooking space. That’s enough to comfortably fit around 12 burgers.
And like the larger Char-Broil models, there’s an extra warming rack beneath the lid. That can be removed if you need to accommodate taller food items on the grill.
The cooking plates are coated in porcelain so they’re resilient as well as being fairly easy to clean. And you won’t have to worry about anything rusting in damp weather. There’s also a tray to collect the grease, aiding clean-up.
Controlling the heat is very easy. There’s a knob at the front which you simply turn to adjust the temperature. An integrated gauge on the lid makes it easy to keep track of how hot the grill is.

If you’re looking for an infrared grill for use indoors, check out this model from Philips. This is another one that runs solely on electricity, so you won’t need to worry about your fuel supplies. And there’s no charcoal to smoke out your home!
The design is a simple flat grill with a handle at each end. An infrared heater runs along each of the longer sides. This works fast, heating the grill to a temperature of 446 degrees Fahrenheit in about a minute.
Note, though, that you won’t be able to adjust the temperature with this one. Set the grill to “pre-heat” to get it going. There’s a separate setting to keep food warm after it’s done.
The heat is nice and even, thanks to concave reflectors which avoid any hot or cool spots. And although it’s not completely smoke free, levels are much reduced – even when fat and juices drip through the grate.
That’s because the droplets are caught by a drip tray that stays cool throughout cooking. There won’t be any flare-ups for the same reason. When you’ve finished, simply slide the drip tray out for cleaning. Even better, the grate can be cleaned in the dishwasher, making clean-up a breeze.

Ignition is automatic, but keep the button pressed for between 3 and 5 seconds to ensure it stays lit. The grill will heat to the desired level within seconds.
The design is tall and narrow, with the cooking compartment measuring just 7 inches across. Rubberized feet keep the unit steady during use.
There are two removable shelves for your meat, fish or vegetables. They’re not particularly big – one large steak will take up most of a shelf. And particularly big cuts may be a squeeze.

This is another grill that’s designed to be placed on a tabletop and used outside. It’s finished in 304 stainless steel, so it looks good and won’t rust. Simply connect it up to a gas cylinder and it’s ready to go.
There are different connection options too. A standard 3/8-inch male flare fitting sits inside the valve and regulator. It will allow you to connect to any propane tank using a 3/8-inch female flare hose.
The hose supplied with the grill will fit a large propane tank. Hoses for 16.4-ounce or RV tanks are available separately.
The powerful design produces 15,000 BTU and a maximum temperature of 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s particularly impressive for a smaller grill.
Here, you’ll get just one shelf, but at roughly 10 inches by 12 inches it’s bigger than the Ivation’s two. You’ll be able to fit a couple of decent steaks on it, with room to spare.
There are six different shelf positions to choose from. That will give you plenty of flexibility for cooking meat, seafood or veggies.
Warming up the grill is fast, taking about four minutes. Cooking is even speedier – grill for just two minutes on each side for a medium steak. A grease tray at the bottom will collect all the drips for an easier clean-up. And you can add some aluminum foil to make it easier still.
Even so, it’s fair to say that cleaning around the rack can be a bit of a pain. The rails holding it in place can be removed to make the task simpler. You will, though, need to spend time unscrewing and reattaching them afterwards.
A fold-down steel door at the front provides handy preparation space. Fold it back up when you’ve finished cooking to keep the interior clean and dry. Also included with the grill are a pair of silicone oven mitts and a wooden tool to clean the grate.
Watch out for windy weather with this one. You can’t use it with the door shut, and the aperture is relatively wide. As a result, you may find that breezes interfere with the flame. Turning it away from the wind or placing it under a well-ventilated shelter will make your life easier.

Well, it’s slightly smaller than its more expensive peer, measuring 19.5 by 13.5 by 7 inches. That’s about two inches narrower and two inches shorter. It’s fine for cooking modest amounts for a couple of people, but won’t feed a larger gathering.
It heats up quickly though, reaching its steady temperature of 446 degrees Fahrenheit in about a minute. If you can afford to wait, you’ll get a better sear on your meat if you give it five minutes to fully warm through.
As with the Philips, there’s a drip tray beneath the grill which stays cool throughout cooking. Any juices that drop down won’t spit or sizzle as a result, keeping your home largely smoke-free. Fattier meat will still produce some smoke, but this grill will cut the amount by around 80 per cent.
The infrared technology means there’s a uniform temperature across the cooking surface. You won’t have to rearrange your food on the griddle to get an even cook. And when your food is ready, there’s a setting to keep it warm at about 230 degrees Fahrenheit.
Other than the keep warm setting, though, there’s no way to adjust the temperature. Whatever you’re cooking will need to be cooked at 446 degrees.
Both the griddle and drip tray can be cleaned in a dishwasher. The non-stick surfaces make hand washing easier too. Whichever option you choose, leave components for about half an hour after cooking to cool down before you start cleaning.
As with the Philips design, the infrared panels here are very bright. Don’t stare at them, or you could damage your eyesight. It can also make it a little difficult to see how well cooked your food is.

Well, this is a portable gas grill with compact dimensions. It measures 21 inches long and 13 ½ inches wide and stands 8 ½ inches tall. The overall height increases to 19 ½ inches when the hood is up.
The cooking surface is 140 square inches, giving you room for around six burgers. It’s not the biggest grill out there, but it will suit couples who love camping and picnics. And at just 15 pounds, it’s not too heavy to lug about.
It’s made in the USA and is constructed from 20-gauge 304 stainless steel – so it’s built to last. Minimal assembly is required. You’ll just need to add the adjustable legs and screw in six bolts for the handles.
The ceramic and stainless steel burners have automatic ignition. That’s powered by a single AAA battery, included as standard.
The grill heats up in just three minutes. And with 14,000 BTU from the compact cooking surface, it gets very hot. Cooking temperatures vary from 500 to around 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Solaire say their grill will cook your food 30 per cent faster. And it will retain 35 per cent more of its natural juices by the end of the cooking time.
The grate itself is an unusual v-shape. The idea is that this collects the juices as they run off the food. These are then funnelled into the burner, where they instantly evaporate. This reduces flare-ups and returns flavor to the food through the resulting smoke.
Note, though, that there’s no drip tray here, which makes cleaning more time-consuming than with some other options. If you’re using your grill on an uneven surface – when camping for example – the v-shaped grate won’t work perfectly.
This model is designed to be used with 1-pound propane cylinders. If you wish, you can connect it up to larger tanks using an adapter. You’ll need to buy the adapter separately, but Solaire produce their own version so you can be sure it fits. There are also conversion kits for connection to natural gas and RVs.
