The Best Oven Cleaner on the Market 2020
1. Easy-Off Professional Fume Free Max Oven Cleaner (Our Top Pick)
If you’re looking for an oven cleaner for everyday use, Easy-Off’s fume free formula could be for you. It’s designed to be used as either a spot cleaner or for deep cleaning.
Because it doesn’t contain lye or other harsh chemicals, you won’t have to deal with overpowering fumes. You can even use it without gloves. It’s available in two fragrances, original and lemon.
It’s intended for use on cold surfaces, where it will start getting to work in just thirty seconds. It’s equally effective on grills and broilers as on ovens. Leave it to do its stuff, and you’ll be able to wipe it away without needing too much elbow grease.
It can be used on either gas or electric ovens. If you have an electric oven with an exposed heating element, however, you’ll need to cover it with aluminum foil.
If you’re lucky enough to have a self-cleaning oven, this can be used there too. Make sure the self-cleaning cycle is switched off and the oven is cold before you get started. Then spray the cleaner around the oven and shut the door.
You’ll need to leave it for at least two hours for the foam to fully penetrate stains and burnt on food. Then wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth or paper towel, and finish by rinsing thoroughly with water.
If your oven also works as a convection oven or microwave, however, this won’t be the right choice. The porous surface can be damaged or discolored by the foam.
And note that you will need to be prepared to take your time. For spot cleaning, leave the foam to do its stuff for two hours. For a deep clean, you may prefer to leave it overnight. And remember that the oven must be completely cool before you start.
Follow those rules and this is a product that reliably delivers great results, even on heavily soiled ovens.
- No overpowering fumes
- No need to wear gloves when using
- Can be used as either a spot cleaner or for deep cleaning
- You’ll need to wait at least two hours for the foam to work
- Not suitable for use in ovens with convection capability.
2. Member’s Mark Grill, Fryer & Oven Cleaner
Member’s Mark was once known as Proforce, but it’s been given an updated look by manufacturers EcoLab. The formula is unchanged, so if you’ve used Proforce before and wondered where it’s gone, wonder no more!
This cleaner is designed to work on ovens, grills and fryers. It’s available in packs of three 32-ounce spray bottles, with enough cleaning power for several deep cleans.
This one can be sprayed onto warm ovens as well as cool. If you don’t want to wait for your oven to cool down before cleaning, it’s a good choice. It’s also very effective on cast iron, so it’s a great choice for hibachi grills and barbecues.
The fumes here aren’t too strong, though the smell isn’t particularly pleasant. You will, however, need to wear gloves before using it, and take care to avoid contact with your skin. It’s powerful stuff, and can cause a nasty burn.
It works extremely fast. Just spray it on, leave for ten minutes and wipe away. It cuts through built-up grease brilliantly. Seriously burnt-on food may require a second application. As you only need to leave it to work for ten minutes, though, that’s not too time-consuming.
In short, this is a great product, as long as you handle it with care and don’t mind a strong smell. If that’s not a problem, it offers superior performance, particularly with greasy ovens and racks.
- Can be used on warm or cool ovens
- Excellent at cutting through grease
- Works in just ten minutes
- This is strong stuff and it will burn if it touches your skin – wear gloves and take care
- The strong smell is rather unpleasant.
3. Carbona Biodegradable Oven Cleaner
If you can’t face an oven cleaner with a strong smell, check out this one from Carbona. It’s almost fragrance-free, and there are no toxic fumes to worry about. More good news is that it’s completely biodegradable.
The amount of time it takes to work will depend on how dirty your oven is. With light soiling, you can get good results leaving it on for as little as 30 minutes.
But if you’ve got burnt-on food, be prepared to leave it for around four hours. Spraying on and leaving overnight is a good option for heavier stains. And you may still need to put in some time scrubbing, rather than simply wiping it off.
It comes in a pack of two bottles with spray wands for easy application. Each bottle contains 16.8 ounces of cleaning product.
The great thing about this one is its environmental credentials and milder formulation. It’s a particularly good choice to avoid children or pets breathing in noxious fumes. And you won’t have to worry about burns if it accidentally gets on your skin.
The trade-off is that it isn’t as fast or effective at cleaning as something like Maker’s Mark. You’ll need to be prepared to leave it on for several hours, do some scrubbing, and potentially repeat the process.
- No noxious fumes and virtually fragrance free
- Completely biodegradable, so it won’t harm the environment
- Won’t burn if it comes into contact with your skin
- It will need to be left on for several hours to deal with heavy soiling
- You may need to do some scrubbing.
4. Astonish️ Oven Cleaner and Grill Cleaner
Another option if you want to avoid smelly fumes is Astonish’s oven and grill cleaner. This comes in the form of a sponge applicator, which can be used to clean both your oven and stovetop.
It works particularly well on glass stovetops and oven doors. Just moisten the sponge with warm water, then press the rough side into the paste at the bottom of the container.
Rub it onto your greasy stovetop or door in a circular motion. The combination of orange oil and the abrasive scouring pad will lift off grease and stains.
For heavier areas of soiling, simply rinse the sponge and apply more paste. Rub it in with a circular motion as before. When the whole surface has been done, wet the sponge again. Now rinse off the paste using the soft side.
Astonish say their product works equally well on oven interiors and racks. We’ve heard, however, that this takes considerably more work. Be prepared to apply a lot of elbow grease to these areas, especially if they’re very dirty.
The other thing to watch out for here is the container itself. The plastic lid is thin and brittle, and if it breaks, you’ll find the paste dries out. You may prefer to empty the contents into your own airtight container.
This is a great cleaner for oven doors. It requires minimal effort, doesn’t smell, and isn’t caustic, so you won’t need to wear gloves. Just be prepared to spend more time and energy removing burnt-on food from inside your oven.
- Easy application using the sponge, with no need to wear gloves
- No noxious fumes
- Fast, effective cleaning of oven doors
- Not so good at removing tough stains inside your oven – be prepared to scrub
- If the brittle container lid breaks, the paste will dry out and become unusable.
5. Sprayway SW826 Grill and Oven Cleaner
Originally established as a glass cleaning firm, Sprayway now manufactures a wide range of cleaning products. They include the SW826 Oven and Grill Cleaner, a thick foam that clings to every surface in your oven.
It can be used on porcelain, glass, ceramics, stainless steel and cast iron surfaces. And it’s safe to be used in microwave and convection ovens.
Application is very easy. Simply spray it on, leave it for a few minutes to work its magic, then wipe off and rinse with water. The foam penetrates right into caked on food. No scrubbing is required, though it might require a few applications for particularly tough stains.
It can be used in warm or cool ovens too. That means you can get on with cleaning straight after cooking if you want to.
This is another powerful cleaner, and it comes with the usual issues. There’s a marked odor. And it’s caustic, so make sure you wear gloves to protect your hands. Take care when you’re using it – there are some serious chemicals here.
The good news is that they make short work of grease and stains. And it works just as well on oven racks, doors and grills as on oven walls.
- Can be used on warm or cool ovens
- Thick foam clings effectively, even to vertical surfaces
- Works in minutes, with no scrubbing required
- Has a fairly strong smell
- Caustic – handle with care and make sure you wear gloves.
6. Easy-Off Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner
The second product from Easy-Off to make our list, the Heavy Duty formula is designed for the toughest cleaning challenges.
It’s applied in the same way as the Fume Free version. Just spray it over your oven walls and wait for the foam to penetrate soils and stains. It can also be used on oven doors, broilers and broiler pans, and stainless steel.
But this is a much faster acting cleaner than its stable mate. Rather than waiting for at least two hours, you can wipe it off after just five minutes. Then give it a rinse with plenty of water and hey presto – your oven is clean.
The fast cleaning action here is courtesy of this product’s high lye content. That makes it very effective at tackling tough stains and burnt food.
But the fumes here are pretty nasty. Wear a mask and keep the room well ventilated whilst using it. If you live in a smaller apartment, aim to clean on a day when you can leave for a few hours afterwards. That will give the fumes time to dissipate and will be a much healthier option.
The formula is also highly caustic, so make sure your skin is fully covered when you use it. Wear long sleeves and rubber gloves to protect your hands and arms.
Take the proper precautions, though, and you’ll get a sparkling oven fast, with no scrubbing required.
- Tackles grease and burnt on stains in just five minutes
- Easy to apply
- Can also be used on stainless steel, broilers and broiler pans
- This gives off serious fumes – wear a mask and keep the room well ventilated during and after use
- You’ll need to wear gloves and long sleeves to protect your skin from burns.
7. Mop Mob Ultra Strong Grill, Fryer & Oven Cleaner
Mop Mob’s professional-grade cleaner is marketed for use in commercial settings. That means it’s up to the challenge of cleaning pretty much any domestic oven.
Here, you get a one-gallon bottle of concentrated cleaner. Mop Mob advises diluting it to a strength of one part cleaner to one part water to begin with. If you find your stains need something stronger, you can simply adjust the concentration. For the toughest stains, it can be used undiluted.
It’s designed to be used in a hot oven. Turn the oven up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, wait for it to reach that temperature, then turn it off. The solution needs to be sprayed into the oven, and you’ll have to get your own spray bottle to do that.
This needs at least two minutes to work, making it one of the fastest acting cleaners on our list. It’s another one that’s lye-based, so good ventilation is very important. If you’ve got an extractor fan, turn it up to the highest setting before you start cleaning.
Because it’s liquid rather than foam, it will run off vertical surfaces fairly quickly. If you have tough stains on your oven walls, you may find they require repeated applications.
- Easy to adjust the strength by diluting with more or less water
- Works in as little as two minutes
- Designed to give great results when used in a hot oven
- Requires dilution, and you’ll need to get your own spray bottle
- Strong fumes – make sure you wear a mask and have plenty of ventilation.
